Making a mockery of the supranational executive / L’exécutif supranational ridiculisé

Version française en bas.

EU_COM.jpg The Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) are extremely concerned by the spate of resignations and national-political wrangling within the EU's executive, the European Commission.

The resignation of Anna Diamontopoulou, the Social Affairs Commissioner, set the ball rolling, and with Pedro Solbes and Michel Barnier set to return to national politics before the end of their terms, the Prodi team seems to be falling apart.

"These resignations show the inherent weakness of the Commission," stated Jon Worth, President of JEF-Europe. "They make a mockery of our supranational executive."

"Far from being Europe's executive defending the European interest, the resignations show how mired in national politics the Commission presently is and that it is a place where top national politicians take refuge for a certain period to plan their come-back."

"To cap it all, Commission President Prodi cannot keep his hands out of Italian politics, discrediting the entire Commission."

JEF-Europe has long called for the transformation of the European Commission into a true European Government, held to account by the European Parliament.

"These resignations show more than ever that the Commission must be better held to account," continued Jon Worth.

"One Commissioner per member state is not a viable formula. Commissioners should be chosen according to their skills and commitment to the institution, not due to their nationality."

"Further, the Commission President should be chosen by the European Parliament and if the Commission team was seen to fall apart in the way the present team is doing, the European Parliament must have the opportunity to turn up the pressure."
